Breaking News: TNO study shows that Intra Hydrocare is highly effective in the fight against MRSA in the Pig industry

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is very difficult to eliminate. This notorious “superbug” can withstand a broad and growing range of antibiotics, and is the leading cause of dangerous hospital infections in many countries. But it is not restricted to hospitals. Pig farms throughout the world have become breeding grounds for strains of MRSA that can jump from swine to humans. The link between MRSA and pigs was first discovered a few years ago in the Netherlands.
The pig industry in the Netherlands is very important. The Dutch authorities investigated the drinking water of 33 pig farms and discovered that 50% of the water is infected with the MRSA-bacteria (Varkensbedrijf, no 6, June 2012). The MRSA bacteria can grow in the drinking water because of the high amount of antibiotics that are administered through the water system. This eliminates all none resistant bacteria leaving the MRSA bacteria with no competitors. Also the biofilm in the piping system is a perfect habitat for Staphylococcus aureus.
